Fall 2024 Semester Highlights
This fall, we at the IEEE Student Branch at ASU had a very successful and productive semester, hosting a range of social events, info sessions, and workshops that supported student learning, professional growth, and community building.
General Board Meeting and Burns & McDonnell Info Session
We kicked off the semester with an introduction to the IEEE Student Branch at ASU during the Burns & McDonnell General Body Meeting. Where students gained insights into our goals, activities, and career opportunities at Burns & McDonnell, while networking with company representatives and peers.

Industry Info Sessions
We hosted multiple info sessions to connect students with leading companies and provide insights into career opportunities:
- Skyworks Solutions: Highlighted high-performance analog solutions, timing systems, and test engineering roles. Attendees appreciated the small-team culture, mentorship programs, and relocation assistance for roles such as internships, co-op programs, and full-time positions.
- Kimley-Horn: Explored career paths in civil engineering with insights into impactful projects like the Ocotillo Bridge and Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport expansion. The session deepened students’ understanding of real-world applications in engineering.
- Texas Instruments: Showcased broad career opportunities beyond electrical engineering, encouraging students from various majors to explore diverse roles and expand their career aspirations.
- CDM Smith: Provided an engaging workshop on interview preparation, covering topics like aligning personal goals with company values, phone screenings, and thank-you notes. Students also learned about CDM Smith’s mentorship programs, tuition reimbursement, and professional development opportunities.
- Power Engineers: Highlighted multidisciplinary services such as power delivery and renewable energy projects. Students gained insights into the company’s supportive work culture, project variety, and focus on professional growth.
- Electrical Consultants Inc. (ECI): Focused on power delivery and renewable energy projects, such as the world’s largest solar power battery storage facility and the Pinal Solar Project. Students learned about advanced technologies and career paths in renewable energy and power systems.

IEEE-USA Science and CHIPS Act Presentation
On October 16th, we partnered with IEEE-USA to host a presentation on the CHIPS and Science Act. Erik Heilman, Director of Government Relations at IEEE-USA, shared insights into this transformative legislation, which provides $52.7 billion for semiconductor research, development, manufacturing, and workforce development. Students learned about its implications for U.S. technological leadership and workforce inclusivity, as well as IEEE’s advocacy initiatives like Congressional Visits Day and the WISE Internship. The session inspired attendees to consider the intersection of engineering, public policy, and their future careers.

Undergraduate Day
We celebrated Halloween with a pumpkin carving event that allowed us to to unwind and have fun with their peers. The activity brought students together for a creative break from their usual studies, giving them a chance to socialize and express themselves in a relaxed, lighthearted setting. This event added a unique and memorable experience to their time at Fulton and ASU, fostering a sense of community through shared enjoyment and Halloween spirit.

RC Control Meet
In collaboration with Fulton Schools Design Experiences, we hosted an exciting RC Control Meet on November 7th. Participants designed, assembled, and raced remote control cars on a track filled with hurdles and challenges, testing their engineering creativity and problem-solving skills. Teams were judged on design, speed, and efficiency, with prizes awarded for top performances. This hands-on event brought together students of all majors for a day of teamwork, friendly competition, and fun, fostering a sense of community and technical exploration.

Tabling Events
This semester, we proudly represented IEEE at several key events, including the Family Weekend Block Party, Reverse Career Fair, and Homecoming Game. These opportunities allowed us to connect with students, families, and professionals, promote our mission, and encourage new memberships. Through these interactions, we strengthened our presence on campus and built lasting relationships with the community.

Looking Ahead
This fall semester, we bridged the gap between academia and industry, empowering our members with knowledge, connections, and hands-on experiences. As we reflect on the progress we’ve made, we look forward to continuing our mission of fostering innovation and professional growth in the years to come.
