In order to qualify for membership, the individual must fulfill certain academic or professional criteria and abide to the code of ethics and bylaws of the organization. There are several categories and levels of IEEE membership and affiliation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Student members<\/strong>: Student membership is available for a reduced fee to those who are enrolled in an accredited institution of higher education as undergraduate or graduate students in technology or engineering.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Graduate student members<\/strong>: Graduate Student Membership is discounted but members at this level have greater privileges than do Student Members.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Members<\/strong>: Ordinary or professional&nbsp;<em>Membership<\/em>&nbsp;requires that the individual have graduated from a technology or engineering program of an appropriately accredited institution of higher education or have demonstrated professional competence in technology or engineering through at least six years of professional work experience.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Society affiliates<\/strong>: Some IEEE Societies also allow a person who is not an IEEE member to become a&nbsp;<em>Society Affiliate<\/em>&nbsp;of a particular Society within the IEEE, which allows a limited form of participation in the work of a particular IEEE Society.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Senior members<\/strong>: Upon meeting certain requirements, a professional member can apply for&nbsp;<em>Senior Membership<\/em>, which is the highest level of recognition that a professional member can directly apply for.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fellow members<\/strong>: The Fellow grade of membership is the highest level of membership, and cannot be applied for directly by the member \u2013 instead the candidate must be nominated by others.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Honorary members<\/strong>: Individuals who are not IEEE members but have demonstrated exceptional contributions, such as being a recipient of an&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/IEEE_Medal_of_Honor\">IEEE Medal of Honor<\/a>, may receive&nbsp;<em>Honorary Membership<\/em>&nbsp;from the IEEE Board of Directors.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Life members<\/strong>,&nbsp;<strong>life senior members<\/strong>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<strong>life fellows<\/strong>: Members who have reached the age of 65 and whose number of years of membership plus their age in years adds up to at least 100 are recognized as&nbsp;<em>Life Members<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>Life Senior Members<\/em>&nbsp;or&nbsp;<em>Life Fellows<\/em>, as appropriate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ieee.org\/membership\/\">Learn more about the IEEE membership and its benefits.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">IEEE societies and technical councils<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>IEEE knowledge groups are member- and volunteer-driven communities, providing cutting-edge research and knowledge on various topics.
