Hands-on research
The Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University is pleased to introduce the Semester Research Initiative, or SERI, a new semester-long research internship launching in fall 2026.
SERI is designed for highly motivated students seeking hands-on research experience at a top-tier research university. The program provides undergraduate (junior and senior) and master’s students the opportunity to work closely with a Fulton Schools faculty mentor on a defined research project. The internship typically lasts 10–15 weeks during the fall or spring semester and involves approximately 30 hours per week.

The program will run for 10–15 weeks.
Time commitment
Expect to work approximately 30 hours per week.
Research areas
Projects are available across a wide range of engineering disciplines.
Program overview
Throughout the semester, participants will engage in a structured research experience under faculty mentorship.
In addition, SERI students will have opportunities to network with industry partners, ASU faculty and fellow Fulton Schools students through professional development workshops, events, and social activities.


Program fee and inclusions
The program fee is $3,000 and includes:
- Online pre-departure orientation.
- In-person orientation upon arrival.
- Professional development workshops.
- Organized social and networking activities.
Please note that housing, transportation and living expenses are not included in the program fee.
Program dates
- Fall internships typically begin between July and September.
- Spring internships typically begin between January and March.
Exact start dates are flexible and will be determined in coordination with faculty mentors.
Eligibility
Eligible applicants include:
- U.S. citizens and permanent residents.
- ASU-sponsored F-1 and J-1 visa students.
- International applicants.
Priority consideration will be given to students between their junior and senior years of undergraduate study and to master’s students who are considering pursuing a doctoral degree.
