DIYBio

About

DIYbio at ASU is a student-led organization dedicated to exploring the emerging and transformative field of synthetic biology—a discipline with the power to revolutionize medicine, sustainability, and bioengineering. Despite its enormous potential, synthetic biology remains underrepresented at ASU. DIYbio is here to change that.

We provide hands-on, research-driven experiences that go beyond the classroom. Through our Open Lab program, students from all academic backgrounds can gain practical lab skills in a collaborative, year-long project setting. This program is specifically designed to introduce synthetic biology in a way that traditional coursework cannot.

Past Open Lab projects include:
– Extracting luminescent genes from Aliivibrio fischeri and expressing them in E. coli
– Engineering E. coli to produce carotenoid pigments

With skills learned in Open Lab, DIYbio members have the opportunity to compete in the International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) competition—an international showcase of student-led synthetic biology projects and innovation. Our iGEM team tackles real-world problems and gains experience in everything from experimental design to science communication.

Additionally, DIYbio hosts ~3 STEM outreach events each semester, bringing hands-on science activities to local elementary schools. These events are a great way to inspire the next generation of scientists while practicing public engagement and leadership

Whether you’re looking to build research skills, get involved in your community, or join a welcoming group of students, DIYbio is the place to start!

Accomplishment
