About

The Amateur Radio Society at ASU is one of the oldest student organizations at Arizona State University. It was established during the 1930s, and the original callsign was W7TJV. In 1997 the club obtained the vanity callsign W7ASU, and in 2008 established a permanent station just north of the main campus in Tempe, Arizona, thanks to donated equipment from the family of Richard S. Juvet Jr. (WB7CDK/SK), the academic advisor for the club during the 1970s and 1980s. As of 2023, we have OVER 50 active members!

W7ASU has a long tradition of communications service on campus and in the communities of Tempe and the surrounding greater Phoenix area. The club aims to mentor interested students and incoming members in Basic/Radio-Electronics, Amateur Radio Rules and Regulations among other things and help prepare for the FCC Amateur Radio Technicians Licensing Exam.

By nature, amateur radio encompasses so many areas of educational content, such as science, engineering, technology, and math (STEM). Whether you are in a technical degree program, or not, you can gain valuable knowledge and skills by learning some of the aspects of amateur radio. This information can enhance your field of study regardless of the major.

W7ASU allows you, the student, to explore past and present radio technologies, as well as participate in an international community with other amateur radio stations and operators around the world simply using the radio airwaves…no internet!

Joining the ARS@ASU is free. The club’s membership is Open to all ASU Students and Faculty and there are ‘NO PRE-REQUISITES’ to be involved in the club or its activities. HOWEVER, you MUST be a LICENSED FCC operator or operate under one in order to participate in our various transmitter operations.

Participation in our events is voluntary, but participation in a school club looks great on your resume!

Members of the ASU community can sign up on Sun Devil Sync (https://asu.campuslabs.com/engage/): search for “Amateur Radio Club” and request to join.

For any other questions please feel free to write to us by eMailing the Primary Contact person or Send us a question via the SunDevilSync portal. The e-mail, [email protected], is also monitored and will be replied to when time allows.

73!

P.S.: As of 2022 we can operate remotely from any authorized computer, thanks to the generous donation of Ham Radio Deluxe. We have an ICOM 7300 with a TA33 beam at 55 ft. A new rotor with computer interfaced control was installed in 2022. The club will also lend handheld VHF/UHF transceivers to licensed club members.

We have a LARGE workspace for projects, lectures, etc. so PLEASE JOIN US!
