About

Sun Devil Rocketry is a completely student-run organization dedicated to the design, manufacture, and launch of high-powered rockets, as well as the development of experimental propellants and propulsion systems.

In addition, Sun Devil Rocketry performs math, science, and engineering educational outreach events in the community. Sun Devil Rocketry promotes inclusion through research and the quest for knowledge. By giving back to the community, SDR promotes STEM and spreads kindness, goodwill, and engineering to today’s youth.

Accomplishments

On April 3rd, 2025, Sun Devil Rocketry successfully conducted a 2-second hot fire test on a 300 lb force liquid engine using isopropyl alcohol for fuel and liquid oxygen as the oxidizer. It marked a major milestone: the first-ever successful liquid rocket engine firing at Arizona State University.

In 2023, the newly formed advanced high-powered rocketry subteam designed, built, and launched a two-stage rocket. This rocket featured a custom flight computer developed by the avionics team and a fully composite airframe. The booster was successfully recovered, and the second stage traveled 2.6 times the speed of sound and reached 44,000 feet, a possible site record at the time.
