About

DIYbio at ASU is dedicated to exploring the emerging field of synthetic biology. Through our semester-long Open Lab program, you’ll get to work on synthetic biology projects like engineering E.coli to express fluorescent proteins (2026), produce spider silk (2025), natural pigments (2024), and bioluminescent bacteria (2024). We further host workshops on finding undergraduate research opportunities at ASU and allow members to apply their open lab skills to represent ASU at iGEM (the world’s largest synthetic biology competition).

Accomplishment

DIYbio’s educational program Open Lab was awarded the Sun Devil Way award in 2024.

The ASU International Genetically Engineered Machine (iGEM) Team has won Gold (2021, 2024, 2025) and Bronze (2022 and 2023) at the IGEM Grand Jamboree in Paris, France.
